apply(meetup): Announcing the Speaker Lineup for February 10
Back by popular demand, we’re excited to host the next apply(meetup) this February 10th from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm PT. The event is free and entirely virtual, making it easy for everyone to attend and participate. Similarly to our prior events, we’re bringing together industry thought leaders and practitioners to discuss the practical data engineering challenges faced when building ML for the real world.
We have a packed lineup of amazing speakers, with some of the highlights presented below. You can find the complete agenda for the day here.
Erica Greene is a Senior Engineering Manager at Etsy. She has been in the ML space for over 10 years, and loves working with teams to build ML-driven products.
Erica will discuss “Model Calibration in the Etsy Ads Marketplace”. She’ll share Etsy’s journey, learnings, and challenges of calibrating ML models and the implications of calibrated outputs.
Vitaly is a Software Engineer at Better, and was previously a Data Scientist at Rent The Runway.
Vitaly will give a practical session explaining how Better.com uses Feast in a ranking system using multiple data sources. He’ll provide a walkthrough of the architecture used to rank large volumes of entities.
Tzvetelina is a Staff ML Engineer in the ML Platform Organization at Twitter. She is the tech lead of the ML Feature Management team and has worked on building two generations of feature stores.
In her session, Twitter’s Feature Store Journey, she will walk through the key parts of Twitter’s journey and the decision to adopt the Feast open source feature store.
Erik Bernhardsson is exploring new ideas in data infrastructure. He was previously the CTO at Better.com and an Engineering Manager at Spotify, where he built the music recommendation system.
In his session “Data Engineering Isn’t Like Software Engineering”, he’ll explore the fundamental differences between data science and data engineering, and why the two disciplines require different workflows and systems.
And the list goes on with great talks from Stefan Krawczyk of Stitch Fix, Pardis Noorzad of Carbon Health, Joe Reis of Ternary Data, and many others.
Beyond this event, we’re also pre-announcing our next event: apply(conf), scheduled for May 18-19th. We’ll be introducing a number of ‘firsts’, including workshops (top of the list of requested improvements!), and a few in-person social gatherings in select cities. This will be a chance to finally meet our community in person, since apply() was born in a virtual-only world.
